The Restoration

The Restoration

An SE 68 is not simply bought. It is found.

The Search

We are constantly searching — online, in private ads, at auctions and flea markets. Not every chair passes our selection process. We inspect the frame, wooden shell, and condition of the joints. Only those that convince us in substance and character make it into the studio.

The Refurbishment

The craftsmanship for the restoration is handled by Schreinerei & Restaurierungswerkstatt Julius Cropp in Kronberg— founded in 1986 as a pure restoration workshop, specialized for almost four decades in the professional refurbishment of historical furniture. At Cropp, contemporary examination methods and proven old techniques come together — not an industrial process, but true craftsmanship.

Each chair is dismantled, cleaned, and gently sanded. The wood is oiled, possibly stained, and given a new finish — the grain remains visible, the patina preserved. The steel frame is de-rusted and refurbished.

The Renewal

Rubber buffers and glides are replaced with brand-new precision parts. This restores the chair's characteristic slight bounce and prevents the typical wobbling of old vintage chairs. Mechanically, each chair is thus restored to a like-new condition.

The Result

What leaves the studio looks as it is — old and honest — but sits like new. No two pieces are alike. This is not a disadvantage. This is the value.
